An Intelligent roof landscape
In collaboration with Rooftop Revolution we have developed the Sustainable Roofs Opportunity Map – a data driven application that makes it possible to gain immediate insight into which sustainable roof solutions are most optimal. Datasets that play a role in this are property characteristics and environmental factors. Property characteristics are factors such as height, type of roof and year of construction. Environmental factors concern data such as water level (after rainfall) degree of heat and solar radiation. By integrating, modeling and visualizing these factors, added value is created as optimal roof coverage can then be given for each roof: a modern flat roof in a water stressed area, for example, is perfectly suitable for a green roof with water retaining qualities, whereas an old sloping roof with good solar radiation is ideal for solar panels.
The Sustainable Roofs Opportunity Map can not only accelerate the realization of sustainable roofs, but processes can also become extremely efficient and accurate. At the same time data is visualized. This is not only pleasant to look at, but also provides insight into new possibilities, tells a story, shows trends and makes data understandable. When visualizing data, knowledge hidden in data suddenly comes to life. The Sustainable Roofs Opportunity Map has been developed for municipalities so that they can easily see which roofs are suitable for a green, yellow or blue roof, so that environmental objectives can be achieved. The map shows per roof which sustainable implementation is the most feasible, profitable and advantageous. By simply clicking on a roof, all the necessary information becomes available.
Various parties benefit from the implementation of sustainable roofs. Think of residents, Owners’ Associations (VvEs) and homeowners, but also social organizations and municipalities. This often involves different interests. Homeowners often look for economic returns while municipalities want to achieve environmental goals. The advantage of our data-driven application is that multiple interests can be realized. The underlying data analyzes are independent and take all factors into account.
Something that can be used in the near future for the implementation of sustainable roofs is satellite images. The images can be of great value because they can scan the material and condition of a roof. Something that is impossible for a person if this has to be done on a large scale. If the satellite images establish a poor quality of a roof and the roof has to be replaced anyway, a green roof could be preferable. The construction costs are then relatively low. If the satellite images show asbestos, the roof must be replaced functionally.
